Qur'an-Burning Pastor Terry Jones Plans His Own 'Hoodie March' to Defend George Zimmerman

SAN NARCISO, Calif. (Bennington Vale Evening Transcript) -- Civil rights and community groups in Los Angeles, Calif., orchestrated a rally downtown on Monday afternoon to demand justice for George Zimmerman's slaying of unarmed Florida teenager, Trayvon Martin. Demonstrators gathered at Pershing Square adorned in hooded sweatshirts, the now iconic symbol used to memorialize Martin, who was wearing such attire at the time of his death. The "Million Hoodie March" is one of several events being led by activists who are outraged at police for not arresting George Zimmerman, and at Geraldo Rivera's assertion that clothes with attached cowls make people with brown skin more frightening. But now, a socially conservative religious group is planning its own hoodie-based march to support George Zimmerman. Gainesville Pastor Terry Jones -- who earned his 15 minutes in the spotlight for burning a Qur'an to protest the construction of a Muslim community center near Ground Zero in New York -- announced that he will hold a rally in front of the Seminole County Criminal Courthouse to defend George Zimmerman's constitutional rights under Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground Law." The event is being co-sponsored by the National Socialist Movement. The NSM is one of the few advocacy groups in the United States that specializes in protecting the civil liberties of beleaguered white Christians.

"What makes our event special, what makes it about standing up for the rights of a law-abiding American and about healing -- not about hiding the perversion of justice behind the distraction of sensationalist rhetoric -- is that we're also also using hoods as symbols," Jones told reporters. "With our folks wearing hoodies too, it takes the stigma and the power away from an article of clothing; it forces people to focus on the real problem of crime in America."
